Claire van Zuylen is a director in the Corporate Department and specialises in insolvency and security arrangements.

She has been chosen as one of the “recommended” attorneys for 2007 and 2008 in South Africa in the field of insolvency and restructuring by the Practical Law Company, which selects practitioners based on recommendations from inhouse counsel and clients. She was appointed to the editorial board of the quarterly journal published by INSOL (International Association of Restructuring, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Professionals) for 2008/2009. Claire is the representative partner for Bowman Gilfillan on the Rail Working Group, an international association of lawyers and banks working to establish an international registry of security over trains and rail stock.

She regularly has articles published in the legal journals and business reports, and is the author of the:

• South African chapter of the international publication “Insolvency and Restructuring” (Getting the Deal Through), which compares insolvency regimes in 46 jurisdictions worldwide, 2004 - 2009;
• South African chapter in the international publication “Cross-Border Insolvency, a commentary on the UNCITRAL Model Law” (Globe Publishers), 2007 and 2008;
• South African chapter of the international publication “Mergers and Acquisitions: A practical Global Guide” (Globe Publications), 2007; and
• South African chapter of the international publication “Company Formation” (Globe Publications), 2009

In addition to her legal degrees, she holds a postgraduate diploma in taxation (UND) and post graduate certificates in Advanced Securities and Corporate Law (Unisa), Securitisations (UCT) and Banking and Financial Markets (Wits). She also practices in mergers and acquisitions, financial services and long-term insurance, and banking/finance.
