Counterfeiters take huge losses in Johannesburg
During recent weeks several raids were done in Joburg CBD focusing on shops, storages and warehouses. On the 9th of February, the BP team, Customs and Metro Police raided Bimo Shopping Centre in Bree street. Whilst trying to gain entry into the first and second floor, counterfeiters were seen moving products and throwing the products into the courtyard. More than 40 shops were opened by breaking the locks and huge quantities of counterfeit brands were seized which included approximately 3000 Nike products and 10 000 Nike labels and quantities of Umbro soccer jerseys. Other raids were done at a storage facility in Eloff street, at a warehouse in Quinn street and shops in Bree, Delver ,Mooi and Small street were quantities of counterfeits were seized. Bruma Flea market was visited and small counterfeits seized . During the planning of some of these raids , information appeared to have been compromised with the results that shops did not open for the day or storage places only having unbranded items.
A truck transporting goods was stopped in the CBD and approximately 3000 counterfeit Nike and other brands were seized. This truck's destination was Bellville, Cape Town which is a counterfeiters paradise. As a result of the clampdown the counterfeiters have issued threats against the anti counterfeit team. Raids were also done in Welkom,Virginia,Frankfurt, Marabastad and the Cape Province where small quantities were seized. Threats will not deter the BP team from conducting raids.
